Today we're sharing news coverage of Aldergrove Elementary's 1971 Christmas pageant from both the Aldergrove Star and the Langley Advance. It's very helpful that the Star published names along with the photos because while most of the students were known, there are a few whose names we didn't know. Sadly, like the school itself, some of the students are no longer with us, but we are grateful that we can remember them through stories such as this.

There weren't any news bits from CFS Aldergrove in December 1971, so I had a look through the November news and found that the Navy wives helped the Legion's Ladies Auxiliary serve lunch after the Remembrance Day ceremony, and there were a couple of serious soccer matches held up at the base on the weekend of November 7th. A bit sad that there weren't any photos of the match published in the paper.

Christmas in Aldergrove 30 years ago - the mall had a Christmas Public Market, Murphy's Christmas Trees had reindeer, Santa arrived in a Hall 3 fire truck, Christmas crafts at Shortreed Community Elementary School and the Grinch getting stolen are just a few Aldergrove #ChristmasMemories from the last century.

The Sears Canada Christmas Wish Book was probably the most waited-for 'book' in the latter part of every year. Here's a look back at some of what was considered the top picks for toys, entertainment and edutainment in 2008. While there was a dedicated 161 pages in the "Toy Section" - which started with kid-sized fitness machines & outdoor sports items - there were also the "Gifts Under A Certain Amount" pages, which went from "Under $10" right up to "Under $500", where most of the featured items were geared towards children.

Here's a Christmas flashback - who didn't love going through the Sears Christmas Wish Book? Something interesting, though - the 50th Anniversary edition is dated 2003 while the 60th is dated 2012. Both of these catalogues are still in their original packaging, but we have a 2008 edition that has been opened, so perhaps we'll take a look back at what was popular 17 years ago in the next few days. 🎅

Today's Navy News hails from 1970, when lots of families were being either transferred in or transferred out. The base also hosted a bi-weekly movie night for Aldergrove's youngsters which was very popular. I wonder if popcorn was included in the two bit admission fee. Then, in December, the Navy even had influence over Santa's movements around town.

Who was Walter Levy & why is the annual residential Christmas Light-up Contest named for him?

Walter was bigger than life. He was present in his community & a stalwart mentor when it came to giving back to community. I looked up to him & will always be grateful for the lessons he taught & the time he gave so freely. If something needed doing & Walter could help, he did.

Walter emigrated to Canada from Germany in 1951, working in Edmonton & then Clearwater. He came to Vancouver in 1953 & worked as a bricklayer. Walter met Afke Groenhof at the Alpen Hall in Vancouver & they married in December 1954, having 5 children: Henry, Bob, Walter Jr, Anny & Betty.

In 1961 they moved to a small chicken farm at Otter. Walter continued bricklaying & in 1966 they moved to acreage on 264th south of 24th.
