It's Cruise-In weekend so there's lots going on this weekend. Skip breakfast at home and get your morning fuel at the Legion or the Veterans & Seniors Centre - or both. The museum will be open and we'll have our 1954 Aldergrove Fire Department pumper truck on display. There are also lots of upcoming events that you can get tickets for, be sure to check out registration information on the posters.

One of the things that drives us batty is people saying that the mall was dead and empty by the 1990s. That simply is not true, as evidenced by this new bistro celebrating its grand opening.

Facebook imageFacebook

These documents, which are related to the Ladies' Orange Benevolent Association were found in a file of photos and documents brought to the museum in the early 1990s by Bertha Farquhar. They are just a small example of the many family history documents hiding in our family history and community history files. Eventually we will get them all properly catalogued and indexed so that they will be easier to find.

The Ladies' Orange Benevolent Association was the women's auxiliary to the Loyal Orange Lodge. The LOBA was founded in 1894 and supported many charities as well as a local orphanage.

Aldergrove's downtown shingle mill. The top photo is an awesome find in our boxes o' stuff because it shows another perspective of the mill with the water tower in the background. Photo 1 shows the east side of the building, while the bottom photo is the west side with the shingle pond on the lower left, and one that we have seen many times.

The last long weekend of the summer is already upon us, but never fear, there are some great events to keep you busy while supporting local groups. Next weekend is Cruise In, with the Legion and the Veterans & Seniors Centre both serving breakfast. With careful timing, you can get first breakfast AND second breakfast!

While preparing for last weekend's Community Heritage Day, we found this photo reprint in a 'new to us' file - meaning it was in a box we hadn't yet gone through. A notation on the back of the photo reads "1932 - Art Ross". Another treasure for our Ross Bros Motors file.

Yes, we usually do our military posts on Tuesday, but today is #MerchantNavyDay, so we decided to have a look way back in Canada's naval history and found this article in the Vancouver Daily News Advertiser for 13 December 1893 as well as a feature article from 1941 in the Vancouver Daily Province. Did anyone in your family serve in the Canadian Merchant Navy?

Facebook imageFacebook

Over the years we have collected many family stories. Most were sent in for The Place Between Volumes 1 & 2, others were donated so that a record of the family was in our archives.

Many are basic stories with just a few facts (that may or may not be correct). Here is the story that was submitted for Book 1 by George Thrower of Jubilee community. We like to work on stores, adding more documented facts & possibly more pictures because as you can see, there are many holes in the Thrower story, which appears on pages 343-344 of Volume 1.

An important point to remember though is that this story was written back in the late 1990s or early 2000s, when it was much harder to conduct any type of research with so little information available online. Thus, many of the family stories were written from memory & …

I ran out of 'characters' for my earlier post, as Instagram only allows for 2200. So...to continue with my thank you acknowledgements, Jasmine from the Aldergrove Elks once again ran a fun photo booth for attendees, but I think she needs more telephone props. I bet we could find some for her. 😉

Last but definitely not least, to our chili teams - thank you for taking the time to participate in our community heritage event. Your dedication and support is very much appreciated. Thank you also to June Speedie from the Aldergrove Legion for setting up an information table.

As already noted today, the Aldergrove Legion Live @ 265 team took first place in both the Judge's Choice and the People's Choice categories. The enthusiastic (and way too energetic, lol) Langley Strong team served up both a meat lovers chili and a vegetarian chili. They took second place in …

Facebook imageFacebook

Thank you to all who came out & supported our Community Heritage Day, including the small band of AGHS volunteers - Scott, Brenda, Teresa & Andrew - you too are appreciated, but the day wasn't about us, it was about the legacy that the Langmann family gave our community.

Few people realize that when the Langmann family generously entrusted AGHS with decades of newspapers & photographs that they were gifting the archives with a living, breathing encyclopedia of our community's history.

That generosity didn't stop when they sold the paper to Black Press. Kurt continued on as editor of the paper, faithfully documenting events big & small for posterity. When Kurt retired, it was the end of an era for Aldergrove; we were losing a dedicated newspaperman who put his commitment to community first, quite often ahead of the needs of his family.

This dedication to journalism & community that …

Audience Participation Time: The theme of this year's Community Heritage Day is the importance of community newspapers, especially our own. We are looking for short comments from you, our readers. Let us know if you believe community newspapers are important and why, or if you have a story about how the Aldergrove Star had effect on something in your life, an ancestor's life, etc. Your comment may end up in our exhibit this Saturday, attributed by first name only.

The only name we have for this 1918-1919 photo of schoolgirls is for the teacher, Nellie Green...and we're not sure if she is the young lady in the white shirt and black skirt or one of the ladies in the back row. Some of the faces look familiar from family photos in our collection so maybe with some investigation (and time) we'll be able to identify more girls.

Facebook imageFacebook

Another candid shot from our historic photo collection. The photographer is standing on the lawn to the west of the FJ Hart building (now our museum) which originally sat on the southwest corner of Fraser & 272nd. The buildings in the background are part of the Smith & Parr General Merchants store.

We aren't 100% certain yet, but the little girl could be Iona Smith, and the man could be her father, Charles Byron Smith, owner of the store. The sign we see on the side of the building would have been advertising FJ Hart's real estate and insurance business. If the little girl is indeed Iona, then this photo could have been taken around 1912 or 1913, as she was born in 1910. The building was sold to the BC Telephone Company at the close of 1916 and FJ Hart constructed the building in 1910.
