As we get ready to celebrate Canada Day with a free community event at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #265, 59 years ago Aldergrove was gearing up to celebrate Canada's centennial with lots of local activities organized by several community groups including the @Aldergrove Elks Assoc. Here is a little Canada Day trivia, courtesy of Canadian Heritage:
The creation of Canada Day
July 1, 1867: The British North America Act (today known as the Constitution Act, 1867) creates Canada.
June 20, 1868: Governor General Lord Monck signs a proclamation that requests all Her Majesty's subjects across Canada to celebrate July 1.
1879: A federal law makes July 1 a statutory holiday as the "anniversary of Confederation," which is later called "Dominion Day."
October 27, 1982: July 1, "Dominion Day" officially becomes Canada Day.

In 1916, the Canadian Engineers were actively recruiting men in the skilled trades. One of the questions our research hopes to answer is who from our local communities answered this call.

For those who would like to know how the Marsh-McCormick got its name. These articles are treasures because they recall the first-hand memories of area settlers instead of relying on "well, Great Uncle Albert said that...."

Quite often we find photos of old businesses from Langley or Abbotsford in our Aldergrove Star photo collection. These photos were often used in advertisements in the newspaper. We know this is one business that was very popular with Aldergrove residents. Who else remembers visiting this store with their parents?

Lots of great entertainment and fundraising opportunities coming up in #ourcommunity. Tonight's @Aldergrove Minor Baseball Association at the Aldergrove Athletic Field looks like it could be a lot of fun.
If you haven't gotten your ticket yet for the Langley Hospice Society Plates & Glasses On The Farm event, you should get it today.
As always, our Royal Canadian Legion Branch is hosting several events; tickets can be purchased at the branch. If you have a ball team, be sure to register for the Legion Baseball Tournament.

Back in 1978, the Peat family opened Bubbles Teen Disco in the Jackman Plaza building. Unfortunately, as is often the case, the actions of a few on the outside ruined the fun being had by many inside, and the disco didn't last very long. Another family stepped in and attempted to open a new disco in its place but could not get approval from council.

On Wednesday 22 October 1958, Mrs. Irene Orwick reported a mysterious red globe she saw near Aberdeen Cemetery. The story missed deadline for our local Aldergrove News, but it was picked up by the Canadian Press news wire and made newspapers as far away as Saskatoon. Note that the CP spelled Mrs. Orwick's name incorrectly.

Back in the mid to late 20th century, the Makela family operated one of the best and most popular auto body shops in Aldergrove. The business was located at 26724 Fraser Highway, which was also the site of Aldergrove's first elementary school, built in 1888 on land donated by Findlay Shortreed.

What made the news 113 years ago today. South Aldergrove School later became Patricia Elementary, and here we also see the start of the discussion to build a bigger school in town. This new school was to become Aldergrove Elementary, which was torn down to make way for the recreation centre. If the basketball game wasn't an outdoor game, it was most likely played in the Agricultural Hall as the school did not have a gymnasium.
