Back in the mid to late 20th century, the Makela family operated one of the best and most popular auto body shops in Aldergrove. The business was located at 26724 Fraser Highway, which was also the site of Aldergrove's first elementary school, built in 1888 on land donated by Findlay Shortreed.

Facebook imageFacebook

What made the news 113 years ago today. South Aldergrove School later became Patricia Elementary, and here we also see the start of the discussion to build a bigger school in town. This new school was to become Aldergrove Elementary, which was torn down to make way for the recreation centre. If the basketball game wasn't an outdoor game, it was most likely played in the Agricultural Hall as the school did not have a gymnasium.

As the 2025-2026 hockey season draws to a close, here's a look back at the formation of the @aldergrove_minor_hockey Association in 1973 and the first ever player registration drive, which was hosted by the Navy Base. How many of you were among those first players?

In May 1961 the old St. Dunstan's Church (271 Street just south of Fraser Highway) was host to the BC Women's Institute's Douglas District Conference. Ladies from all over the Lower Mainland and the Sunshine Coast were in attendance. Lunch was provided in the United Church Hall, and the ladies also spent some of their time visiting the downtown commercial core.

Facebook imageFacebook

We're asking for help from our heritage hive - these Aldergrove Star photos are in a box dated "1990s", can you help us narrow down a year, confirm the school (we think it might be Shortreed) and possibly provide some names, so that we can search the Aldergrove Star papers for the story that goes with the photos. Thank you as always for your help. =)
