Aberdeen – 1884 - LEHMANN, Victor & Mary (from The Place Between V1)

Victor (1862-1940) & his wife Mary (1866-1900) arrived in BC from Ontario in 1884, homesteaded for 56 years on 80 acres on the Lehmann Road (Downes Road) in Aberdeen. (Note that Lehmann Road is not Mt. Lehman Road)

Victor & Mary had 6 children: Josephine (1889-1966) married William Gledhill, well known for her keen interest in the community & was instrumental in organizing the Aberdeen Community Club in 1924. Albert (1895-1961), Edward (1897-1975), Eliza (1892-1950), Emelia (1891-1965) & Caroline (1900-1968).

Victor & his brother Joseph were responsible for much of the early road & bridge building in the district & Vic served on Matsqui School Board around 1908.

Victor was an inventive man who was in demand as a blacksmith, as he possessed an anvil & forge. He invented a threshing machine, completely made from wood, as …

Today we're visiting Rev. Valentine, and many of you will remember him as the Vicar for St. Dunstan's Church. Rev. Valentine and his family lived in the house at 2905 272 Street, which was originally built for Re. Moir and his family.

The photos of the church are from the collection shared with us by Debra Haas, whose great grandfather Harold Endacott was very involved with St. Dunstan's as one of the parish founders and the first Rector's Warden. These photos were most likely taken when the church was dedicated on 7 June 1956. The first vicar for the church was Rev. Calland; Rev. Moir took over in 1963, followed by Rev. Valentine in 1966.

October is #FamilyHistoryMonth, and we're starting off with a photo (one of many) that has been shared with us by Debra Haas, great granddaughter of Harold Endacott. The house in this photo once stood where Cranky's Bike Shop is now located. The store is in the second house that is also mentioned in the caption, which was built by Richard Endacott.

It's important to note, that if Debra hadn't shared photos from her Grandmother's album with us, we might never have seen some of the long-gone buildings (and people) in our community. We are very grateful to Debra for her ongoing support of our efforts to learn about and preserve Aldergrove's history. If you have old family albums, please consider sharing them with us - we can even scan and return them to you, complete with digital copies.

Today's look back at NRS Aldergrove comes courtesy of the RCN's newsletter The Crowsnest from 1949 and 1950.

CPO Cliff Watt, seen in the lower right photo in image 1, arrived at the station in 1943, and remained there until his retirement in 1953. The family lived in Aldergrove for many years and Cliff was a very active citizen. He became a CGA, was a member of the Aldergrove Fire Department, Aldergrove Chamber of Commerce and the Aldergrove Agricultural Association. Cliff was an integral part of the Township's Utilities Commission, which brought improved water services, sidewalks and streetlights to our town. He also helped organize several baseball tournaments and was a member of the Langley Curling Club.

In 1921, Municipal elections were held on the 13th of January, with the new (or returning) council members taking their seats on the 17th. These news clippings from the 14th of February discuss the state of the Township one month into the new council term.

This last weekend of September 😳seems to be a bit quieter, but there's still a few activities around town and several coming up, such as the All Candidates Meeting on Monday the 5th of October, something we highly recommend that Aldergrove voters attend. Connect with the people whose names are on the ballot, ask questions, gauge answers and then get out and vote on October 17th (or at the advance polls).
