Last week we learned that in 1964 the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #265, Aldergrove used building bonds to raise money for its new home. In 1975 the Legion expanded, adding more indoor space as well as outdoor community space.

In 1964, the recently-formed Royal Canadian Legion Branch #265, Aldergrove was raising money for its new building by selling Community Bonds. An investment of 10.00 would bring the bond bearer 60 cents in interest income each year, or $6.00 for the term of the bond, and the town would get a brand new Legion hall, which still serves the community today.

Sometimes clues to where things and people were located in our community come in articles where they were not expected. Here we learn about the locations of two mills and the people involved with them. Here we learn that a Mr. Robert Dickie owned the NE quarter of Section 36 in Township 10, that he planned to build a mill, and that a man named Henry B Sullivan appeared to have a mill nearby.

While they were off fighting, soldiers could have part of their pay sent home to their families and the government very helpfully produced booklets for those at home on how to stretch their Separation Allowance. This booklet has been made available by The University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.

This was our second No Stone Left Alone ceremony. First and foremost, we are thankful for the veterans we honour at Aberdeen Cemetery. We are also grateful for the ongoing support from the City of Abbotsford, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 265 Aldergrove, our active Canadian military as well as our veteran attendees, School District 35, the students, teachers and parents of Shortreed Community Elementary School, our volunteers and of course the families of the veterans who provide us with photos and stories of their own that help keep the memories of their ancestors alive.

Thank you to those who came out to participate and remember.

A very interesting article from CBC News today about Canadians who fought at Vimy Ridge and the traces they left behind. Aldergrove's future Post Master George Hamilton McDonald was at Vimy, as was Matsqui's Alan Henry Hill-Tout. Both men survived and are interred at Aberdeen Cemetery. These men were among the 71 veterans recognized at our No Stone Left Alone ceremony held on November 6th at the cemetery. Wouldn't it be incredible if their names were found among the many scratched into the walls of the chalk tunnels?

Air Raid Protection and Civil Defense in WW2. The ARP group was responsible for citizen safety and offered many courses such as first aid, plane spotting and others as shown in today's image. ARP is also the reason that many communities obtained fire departments, Aldergrove included.
