Do you recognize anyone in this Aldergrove News photo from 1959? I think I saw one of those old typing skills textbooks recently - you remember the one, it opened on the short side and stood very nicely displaying the lessons that needed to learned that day - until you whacked it off the desk with the paper carriage.....

Facebook imageFacebook

Instead of our usual HMCS Aldergrove Tuesday post, we are featuring a military treasure found during this month's museum clean, sort and scan activities. We were beyond thrilled to find these two photographs that had been stored in an unlabelled box in a nondescript manila envelope with "from Joe Breier" written in very small letters near the envelope's flap. In these photos is Harry Patrick Breier, Joe's older brother, who never came home from WW2. We've featured Harry's story in a past Veterans' Month post which you can find by using the search function.

The top photo was taken in Edmonton, where Harry was stationed from 28 July - 11 September 1942. The bottom photo was taken in Regina, where he was stationed from 7 February - 15 May 1943. He headed overseas on the 5th of March 1944, taking part in many flight assignments and proving himself to be …

It would be so nice to have a park with a usable lake in our modern community like the one built by Mr. Parish. According to satellite view on Google Maps, the lake is still there.

Facebook imageFacebook

The Young Canada Book Week was established by the Canadian Association of Children’s Librarians in 1949 and was held in November, coinciding with Book Week in the USA. It was later moved to the week of April 23rd, which is World Book and Copyright Day. Some areas in Canada and the US hold a Young Readers Book Week in both April (May in the US) and November.

My school librarians were Mrs. Parks and Mrs. Nash at Aldergrove Elementary. I believe Mrs. Parks also visited Patricia School, where our library was in the hallway that connected the two classrooms, the teachers' office and the washrooms.

Looking northeast towards Fraser Highway from the old fire hall. Most of those houses are still standing, of course the barn is long gone. Look how nice and green the scenery is - until the blizzard arrived a week later as seen in yesterday's post.

Facebook imageFacebook

This is the first ground-level photo we've come across thus far of the original Aldergrove Gospel Chapel, built in 1958, located at 3118 272 Street. We've seen the chapel in several aerial photos, but there seem to few taken on the ground. The second photo we found was in an Aldergrove Star article from June 1976, after the property was sold to the Aldergrove Centre Mall owner, when there was much controversy in trying to relocate the building.

The new Aldergrove Gospel Chapel opened in 1977 at 26580 29 Avenue. Its founder, Mun Hope, passed away in 2011 and by 2014 the Chapel was inhabited by the Congregation of the Assembly of Christians. It is now home to the Indian Brethren Assembly.

Facebook imageFacebook

John McMillan was a popular business owner in Aldergrove, sadly both of his buildings are long gone. His first store location was sandwiched between what is now the car wash and the parking lot for the Telus substation. His second store was just to the east of the Elk's Hall, many of you will remember it as the location of the OK Corral convenience store which burned down a number of years ago.

John was also a member of the Aldergrove Volunteer Fire Department and the Chamber of Commerce as well as other community groups. While his house address was on what is now Fraser Highway, it was actually behind Doc Findlay's Medical Clinic and accessed off the alley. If you look at the photo in the post about Doc Findlay, you'll see the corner of John's house in the background.
