Not surprisingly, most of the "Looking At Langley" features in the Langley Advance were, well, focused on Langley - but as we saw with yesterday's post, every once in a while we find Aldergrove stories.

Facebook imageFacebook

Starting in the mid 1980s, the Langley Advance ran a feature series called "Looking At Langley" which often featured photos from early editions of the newspaper, or even photos in their files that hadn't been published. I was happy to find a re-run of this aerial photo showing Aldergrove High School under construction as the original article from 10 October 1957 was blurry (the fault of whomever was doing the digital scanning at the time not doing a quality check).

I also discovered that a hard copy of the photo of Trevor Beggs had been put in the Fire Hall files a number of years ago with a note saying he was inspecting the building of the new fire hall. This was obviously not correct, and the photo has been moved to the proper file with the right information. =)

With the Township currently undergoing a transit assessment process we thought it would be interesting to take a look back at one of the early transit options available to local residents. While the article doesn't mention the Hamre Bus Service or Blue Funnel, it is still an informative look at Langley's transit options in the early part of the 1900s.

Facebook imageFacebook

Another weekend is behind us, and that means a few hundred more Aldergrove Star photos have been scanned. Here are a few that were in an envelope on which the closest we can come to a time period is "October 31" for a development date...sometime in the 1990s.

Once the second half of our Aldergrove Star newspaper digitization project is online (and we have our physical newspapers back from Barber Learning Centre at UBC), we'll be able to start the long task of comparing the scans with the newspapers to get dates and (hopefully) names.

We felt it only fitting that on a day when there will be a candlelight ceremony at our Royal Canadian Legion Branch 265 Aldergrove to commemorate our veterans and to mark the 107th anniversary of the battle at Vimy Ridge that we highlight the 1998 painting and dedication of the Memorial Mural which graces the south wall of the Legion building.

4 October 1998 - the day Sheldon Kennedy skated into town during his cross-country tour to raise funds for a sexual abuse treatment centre in Radium. While his campaign raised almost 3 million dollars, it wasn't enough to get the treatment centre up and running, so he donated the funds to the Canadian Red Cross and became a spokesperson for the organization about sexual abuse awareness.

Facebook imageFacebook

The answer to yesterday's question:

BEAVER SCHOOL – from The Place Between Volume 1

The first school in Coghlan district was built in 1892-93 by James Skea, brother of early settler John Skea. John Knox, another early Coghlan Road settler, donated land for the school & assisted James Skea with the structure. It was located on the northwest corner of Coghlan & Roberts Road (SW corner of SW ¼ section 11 Township 11) and named Beaver School.

The original trustees were A.M. Richardson, Joseph Sherlock & John McDonald. The 20 x 34 foot wooden schoolhouse was valued at $700 & was also used for church services. Newly graduated Miss C. Shortreed was the first teacher when the school opened in 1893.

Douglas School was located 2 miles east, and in 1907 it was decided that one of these schools must be closed. With the coming of the electric train, the …
