The answer to yesterday's question:
BEAVER SCHOOL – from The Place Between Volume 1
The first school in Coghlan district was built in 1892-93 by James Skea, brother of early settler John Skea. John Knox, another early Coghlan Road settler, donated land for the school & assisted James Skea with the structure. It was located on the northwest corner of Coghlan & Roberts Road (SW corner of SW ¼ section 11 Township 11) and named Beaver School.
The original trustees were A.M. Richardson, Joseph Sherlock & John McDonald. The 20 x 34 foot wooden schoolhouse was valued at $700 & was also used for church services. Newly graduated Miss C. Shortreed was the first teacher when the school opened in 1893.
Douglas School was located 2 miles east, and in 1907 it was decided that one of these schools must be closed. With the coming of the electric train, the …

Today's post isn't about Aldergrove, but it's still an interesting read. It's a feature on Fort Langley from the Sunday Magazine published by the Vancouver Sun on 30 August 1947.

Did you know that DW Poppy, in addition to (over a number of years) being a post master, school trustee, councillor, reeve, police commissioner and magistrate was also an award-winning honey producer?
Honey has been an important agricultural crop in this area for over 100 years, and as planting time nears please support the pollinators and honey producers with bee-friendly plants. =)

The 1885-1886 Supplementary Voters' List, which added newcomers to the area to the official Voters' Lists, appears to be the first time our community makes an appearance in the roster. As you can see, it is listed as "Alder Grove". Prior lists have only noted our region as "Langley" or "New Westminster District" or even as "Township 10" or "Township 13".
While I haven't yet been able to find Voters' Lists for 1887, 1888 or 1889 online, Aldergrove as one word appears in the 1890 list, as does Alder Grove. That said, the 1887 British Columbia Directory published by Mallandaine and Williams does list residents as living in Aldergrove.
