Here is the Victoria Daily Times editorial that spawned the discussion regarding the certification of Aldergrove's teaching staff as well as that of other practices within the province's Department of Education.

From a question raised yesterday, it would appear from the 1887-88 report that all school costs - buildings, furnishings, maintenance, rents, salaries etc., were paid by the province with tax dollars. There are many other very interesting bits of information to be gleaned from these reports, especially for those interested in history and/or the provincial education system. One item of note is the subject of attendance, and how attendance can be a reflection of the teacher and the school itself. While the report does note that epidemics can play a part in low attendance, the report fails to observe that many of the children live on working farms, which in and of itself could interfere with a youngster's time at school.

Pursuant to yesterday's news article about Aldergrove's teacher, here is information from the government's report on schools for the year 1888-1889. Aldergrove had 3 teachers. Miss Murchie held a 2nd Class Certificate while Mrs. McKee and Miss Gibson both held Temporary Certificates. Miss Gibson did obtain her 2nd Class B Certification in August 1888.
Something else that might be of interest are the names of the three students who made the Provincial Roll of Honour. Miss Christina Shortreed went on to pass her High School entrance exam in 1889, and as most of you know, she went on to become a school teacher. You can find out more about her teaching career and life by searching her name on this page.

It seems that there was some teacher certification controversy in 1888, and Aldergrove's teacher may have been caught up in it. This will take some more looking into on a day when more time is available for research.

Cleaning out and sorting the museum's files has it benefits, like finding a photocopy of the 1932 senior class photo from Otter School. Unfortunately there's no names to go with it, but I know the name of one of the young men because he was my Grandfather. Burt Ross is the tall one 3rd from the left. Side bonus, his future sister-in-law is mentioned in the promotions list. =)

Every once in awhile we find a news article that both confirms and adds to information that we already have, which this one does in spades. Sadly, it does not give us the answer to a couple of burning questions we'd have for many years. All the same, this is a very interesting articles about Aldergrove in the spring of 1889.

Can you help us with some names and maybe identify the school? We don't know if these photos were taken at the same time, but they were in the same photo file. Judging from apparel and the Kodak poster on the wall, the earliest year for the second photo is 1984, as that's when the poster was published.

So many great events happening this weekend and throughout the coming week. If you have youngsters who like to make lemonade, be sure to get them registered for the ABA's Little Lemonade Legends event next weekend. If computers are more their thing, check out Code & Play at the Aldergrove Library. Tonight is Aldy's Car Show up at the high school, and the Aldergrove Fair is on all weekend at the Athletic Park.

#BuildingStories about Aldergrove's settler history can often be a challenge, especially when not all of the documents needed are available online and there isn't a family story in The Place Between, but sometimes we get just enough information to be able to confirm heritage stories that have been passed down through the years.
We have long heard that there was a community hall that was also used as a school where the hotel once stood. Here in Mr. Edward Z. Whyman's homestead application is confirmation that there was indeed a hall that had been built "for the convenience of his settler neighbours" and upon which "he made no ownership claim." As for Mr. Whyman and his family - we will tell their story another day once we have woven a tale from all the documents and information sources that have been located.

Today's military post goes back to WW2 and a Royal Canadian Navy Petty Officer who got an unexpected taste of home. This story is from The Place Between Volume 2 1939-1970 and was written by Aldergrove resident & veteran Ben F Smith.
During World War II, I served with the Canadian Navy as an ERA (Petty Officer, Engine Room). While on the frigate HMCS Jonquiere, we were assigned to something called Western Approaches, where we operated out of Great Britain and were either on convoy duty or anti-submarine patrol.
I believe we were on our way to Iceland and I had just come off watch, all set to tuck into breakfast when I could hardly believe my eyes. There in front of me was a real egg. What a delicacy! We had been suffering with those ruddy powdered eggs which tasted like sawdust, and now here I was about to …
