Today's post is a "memories" style of article by long-time resident Greta Vesterback Nelson. Her family once owned the property & had a house on the land where our museum now stands. Her husband's family owned the property where Freshco is now located. Stories about their families have been previously posted on this page.

Part of the article that was of particular interest to me was the mention of Barnsley's coffee shop. Upon doing a bit of research (a.k.a. rabbit hole), I learned that Walter & Elizabeth Barnsley bought the business from Mrs. J. Watson in the summer of 1932.

I found a fair bit of information about the Barnsley family in old issues of the Langley Advance. Mr. Barnsley was a barber by trade, so he also ran a barbershop in conjunction with what was listed as a confectionary. That said, prior to moving to Aldergrove, Mr. Barnsley ran …

Horse 4-H kids 49 years ago, and many are still friends to this day. If I remember correctly, the Abbotsford 4-H barns were possibly down on Riverside between King and Vye Roads, maybe south of Vye. It's been awhile, lol.

Kohler's Meats was a large part of Aldergrove's history, not just as one of the biggest local employers at the time. The company was very present in #ourcommunity as a sponsor of local events, sports teams and regular donor to local causes, including the donation of a very large ham to help save Granny's annual Christmas dinner.

Behind the scenes - what we do during winter closure. We clean stuff out, appraise objects and check for documentation in preparation for assessment and we find cool things we didn't know we had.

In the first photo, volunteer directors Brenda, Sarah and Andrew are documenting objects from what we call "the work room" which will soon include a dedicated scanning station for larger items. Off camera, volunteer directors Teresa and Scott, along with new volunteer Janice were lining items up to be assessed while Jim, another new volunteer, was planning for better storage capacity in the pantry and over the tub in the washroom.

In the second photo are three vintage examples of fire fighting equipment. The one on the left is from the 1970s, while the other two are over 100 years old, manufactured in Winnipeg - one of which still had its fire suppression contents. We took …

New Commercial Building Opens In Aldergrove - January 1977. The new building was home to Aldergrove Realty and Bayside Sound (Radio Shack). It's interesting to note that the incorrect address is shown for Radio Shack. The one in the advertisement and article would have put it across the street from where it was actually located.

Aldergrove & community news from 80 years ago - retirements, business changes, soldiers coming home from the war, agricultural advancements, news from some of the neighbourhoods and films at the theatres in Langley & White Rock. Aldergrove was still 11 years away from having its own newspaper and 4 years away from the opening of the Grove Theatre.
