Here are two more pages from "the Coghlan booklet", courtesy of the late Mary Twemlow.

We've had a few requests for the names of the bands that played at the 1969 Aldergrove Beach Rock Festival. Here are a few articles and reviews that name a good many of the musical acts.
There was a programme produced for the festival (included with the price of admission) and if anyone out there still has one, we would love to be able to scan and return it to you (unless you want to donate it to our archives). =)

Another Aldergrove history nugget - this postcard was sent from Aunt Carrie (Anna Caroline Jackman nee Wadel), who was the wife of Philip Jackman Jr, to one of her nieces, Emilia Lehmann. While we haven't yet placed Emilia in the Settler Family Tree yet, we have some great clues as to which branch she belongs.
The note in blue ink was added at some later date, we don't know when or by whom. We also now know who took the photo of Philip Jackman Sr's first house in Aldergrove. For years we thought it was FJ Hart when in fact it was well-known photographer W T Cooksley.

Aldergrove's RCSCC Columbia was keeping busy during the summer of 1963, let's have a look at what they were accomplishing in this week's Aldergrove News columns.
This week's featured photos are large logs used for very tall radio reception masts.

Two different photos put together - looking north from the Lynden side of the Aldergrove-Lynden Land Port, possibly the spring or summer of 1963.

Gardening season is starting to wind down, except for harvesting the late Autumn crops. What have you harvested this year? Show us your garden photos in the comments. =)
With today's 1944 Victory Garden article we're sharing a WW2 dietary poster. Factories needed their workers able to function at top capacity every day, so the Health League of Canada produced this healthy eating poster.

We've posted about the William Parish family in previous years, but this photo wasn't included in The Place Between but was in our collection of photo negatives. It looks like Ralph brought home dinner. Just for fun, I colourized the photo using the AI photo enhancement feature on MyHeritage.
Also included in today's post is a recipe for Hare Soup that I came across. I can't find the original book where I first saw it, there was a recipe for Lark Pie on the same page. That said, Mrs. Beeton's 1861 Book of Household Management has the same recipe and is available on Archive[dot]org for those who are interested.

A very rare item has been gifted to our museum and archives by J. Hockin - a poster advertising the May 1969 Aldergrove Beach Rock Festival.

Another treasure - scanned from a negative, this photo is actually quite blurry so wasn't used in The Place Between, but we still think it's awesome. One day we'll get these people properly identified, it just takes a lot of photo sleuthing, which takes a lot of time.

As previously mentioned, the HMCS Aldergrove's weekly social column seems to have gone into hiatus for 1963. The Navy Blues bowling team was still active throughout the year, and I've included a few snippets of related Navy items that I found in the Aldergrove News as well as another recently scanned photo. Next week will feature some 1963 RCSCC news.

The latest donation of Aldergrove High School memorabilia - thank you to Mr. J. Hockin for these gifts. Not shown are an Aldergrove class ring and school sweater.
Not all of the football team members have been identified. Please let us know if you recognize someone. =)

Well this is disappointing. The house will lose its historic connection to Fort Langley's main street in the name of progress, but at least it's not just going to be demolished like so many other older homes and commercial buildings in the Township.

Victory Garden column for 21 September 1944 - this week's post carries an 'historic language' warning as it contains terms that are inappropriate for today's society but were in use during the time that this column was written.
The top photo is of the Bradner Peace Arch War Memorial at Bradner School, in memory of Bradner's veterans. The bottom photo is in memory of a time when Fall Fair entries filled an entire arena. The Fairs held in the 1940s would have had bounty from local Victory Gardens on display.

Another laser copy of a page from what we're calling the Coghlan-County Line booklet. We are not sure who put the booklet together, but we are suspecting that the late Mary Twemlow may have a hand in it. If anyone recognizes the handwriting, please let us know.
According to BC Assessment, the Pete Boris house is still standing, but reports that it was built in 1923, not 1925. The Brooks/Todd house was reportedly built in 1939 and is still standing at 6535 256 Street. Both are surrounded by trees, so it's hard to see them from the road. The Kennedy house appears to be gone.

Yesterday was treasure day at the museum. Found: several more folders containing photos, collages and written information. Many of the photos were not used in either book and contain many clues and puzzle pieces for Aldergrove's story. The ladies formed Aldergrove's Red Cross Unit during WW1.

Sometimes research needs to be done in overseas newspapers, and while searching out donation schemes and the care of orphans, a 1964 editorial about Victorian inventions appeared in the results. It's interesting to note that some of these inventions are still around today, although I believe the Vigor's Horse Action Saddle was probably more popular as a ride for kids. It's also important to note all of the health benefits of owning an adjustable "rest chair" as well, what with turkey season approaching. 😉
