Did you know that there was an Aldergrove connection to the endless searching for the Lost Creek Mine (Slumach's Gold)? In 1959 three hopeful prospecting farmers set off to try their luck in locating the treasure.
Of the three prospectors, Alf Newman was the easiest to trace as his sister Bessie married Richard Catto, son of early settler Joseph Catto and his other sister Elsie married Trevor Beggs. Alf passed away in 1981, age 66. At the time of his death he lived at the Alderhaven apartments, 27264 30 Avenue.
One of the articles states that Robert Blakey lived on Kendall Road (62 Avenue). According to the 1958 phone book, this also is where his mother lived. Their address was 26191 62 Avenue. Sadly, Robert died when he fell into the Fraser River in October 1975. His body was found near Bowman's Mill, which was located in Chilliwack. On his …
Last Thursday evening Global News had a story by Jay Durante about the only fish cannery still operating on the BC coast - St. Jean’s Cannery & Smokehouse in Nanaimo*. In contrast, here's how many fish canneries were in operation in 1892, according to Williams' BC Directory.

Doctors and Teachers in the Williams' 1892 British Columbia - where teachers far outnumbered the doctors. While the directory states that it's a complete list of Medical Doctors for the province, it also then states that some are missing.
With the propriety of the time, overlooked are the many unlicensed Indigenous healers, settler wives and Asian immigrants who were very knowledgeable in regards to providing medical attention to those who were in need.

This week's 1944 Victory Garden article discusses the importance of good health in our plants. We're also looking back at what is becoming a rarity in our town - community halls. They were once the centre of any community and district, offering affordable local space for any type of gathering, and a topic we'll be diving deeper into in the near future.

There is a lot going on in our community - note that some of these events require registration, so even though they aren't this weekend, we're letting you know about them now. (Open the image in a new tab to get full size)
This weekend we've got two charity car shows, an art show & reception, a chance to buy some sparklies as well as an invasive plant offensive at Kinsmen Heritage Park.
Among the coming events are a Seed Saving seminar on Wednesday, ongoing activities at the Aldergrove Library and a Community Farm visit that might interest some of you. As always, the museum will be open on Sunday afternoon.

Who lived here 130 years ago? Here are the listings for Aldergrove, Shortreed, Otter, Langley Municipality, Langley Prairie and Mount Lehman from Wrigley's 1894 BC Directory. We have stories and family information on many of the Aldergrove area settlers, and others we're working on, as we wind our way back through history to before the settlers arrived.
Many of the settlers listed as living in Aldergrove actually lived in Matsqui, but for whatever reason, while there is a description of Matsqui in the directory, it doesn't list any people living there and instead refers to Mission City. Note that in its standalone entry, Aldergrove is one word but in the entry for Langley Municipality, it's two - Alder Grove. With the overlap of the many communities, some residents are listed twice. For example, DW Poppy is listed in both Otter and Langley Prairie.
You will also see that the majority …
The 1969 Interact Club Bed Race was hotly contested, but the Aldergrove High School team was first across the finish line. The Interact Club is sponsored by local Rotary Clubs around the world, and while Aldergrove's Rotary Club is very active, there is not currently an Interact Club at ACSS.

Early indications in the cataloguing of the Harry Hunt Collection of CDs is that there are many 4-H photos. Here is one of them, in a mash-up of the original photo and the information that appeared on page 9 of the 22 March 2012 Aldergrove Star. This photo is one of the few printed photos we have in the collection, but an excellent clue on dating it was the St. Patrick's Day balloon in the background.
We are closing in on our 700th CD to be catalogued, with another large box yet to be processed. Once the CDs are catalogued and numbered, we'll be going back to itemize and number each photo on every CD, which also involves finding the newspaper edition the photo appeared in.
Naturally, Harry took more photos than what we will find in the newspapers, but at the very least we'll be able to nail down …
Hot Weather Alert - the museum will be open at noon, but please be aware that if we can't get the temperature down inside the building to something tolerable for our volunteers (it was 28 degrees in there at 930pm last night), we will be closing early. Please call ahead to check our status if you're planning to visit us today. Thank you for your understanding, here's hoping that our borrowed portable AC unit will kill the heat. =)
