Recognize anyone?
Here are some Langley Walk images - possibly from the first walk, maybe the second, we're not sure yet. If this is the first Langley Walk, then the year is 1963.
In the background you can see Aldergrove Park (now Philip Jackman Park), the Buxton family's house on the left and the Vesterback house on the right, along with a Bertrand Creek that's not choked by blackberries.

I know today's post is a bit later than usual, my PC and I were having a difference of opinion.
Here are some recent donations to the Aldergrove Community Museum & Archives. We have very few artifacts related to the Aldergrove United Church, so this plate is a real treasure. The former United Church building at 29A and 272 is the second oldest building in the our downtown core that's still standing. It was built by members of the community on land donated by Mr. FJ Hart.
Some may wonder why, if we're an Aldergrove museum we accepted this wonderful donation of Langley High School annuals. The answer to that, as many others know - is that before Aldergrove's high school opened in 1958, those who were of high school age attended LHS - and we have been gifted these four annuals with identified photos of all those Aldergrove students. …
The Navy news from HMCS Aldergrove was sparse for August 1962, so we've given you two months at once.

Monday Puzzle Day - do you recognize these ladies? The event they're at is The Langley Walk, and this is in Aldergrove, again 1963-ish.

Identified, thanks to Dean Williams - it is located at 28941 Haverman and is the Fraser Valley Buddhist Temple. It was built in 1955. =)

Continuing on from yesterday's post, this was more like the typical Aldergrove welcome to new or expanding businesses. By October 1967 the Billingham's store had closed and Morelli's Furniture was moving in to the same building.

Does anyone remember this store? I've found other, smaller advertisements into October 1966, but there doesn't appear to be any accompanying story for a new business opening or closing in town, which was very unusual for Aldergrove at that time.
In 1955 there was a Billingham's at 3335 Kingsway in Vancouver, and I've found a few death registrations for Billingham men whose occupation was listed as "Dry Goods Dealer" or "Retail Clothier" so that's a lead. Now to find a 1966-67 Aldergrove phone book and go back through the relevant newspapers with a fine-toothed research comb...

It's really hard to find any articles about the school office staff where more than one or two people are mentioned, which is kind of sad when you think about it, because the ladies in the office were really the school's lifeline. This article is the most relevant to the history of our local schools.

202 teachers - 34 of them new, prepared to welcome back the youngsters of Langley School District for the 1966-67 school year - here are their names, from the Central Fraser Valley Echo. According to a 1978 news article in our files, the 1978-79 school year saw 690 teachers in the district. According to the SD35 website, the district now employs over 3,800 teachers, support staff and administrators.

Back to School 1966 - celebrating 15 teachers with 25 years in front of a classroom, along with a quick look at what the teens were wearing to high school.
Tomorrow we'll see which teachers were teaching at which schools - all 202 of them. =)

There wasn't a Victory Garden news article for the end of August 1944, so instead I'm sharing an article that I find somewhat ironic - the government paid $29000.00 in 1977 to plant trees in the median along Highway 1 so that 47 years later the government could pay to remove them.
I've also shared two timely recipes from the Aldergrove News as the season for bake sales and classroom gatherings is upon the parents of school children everywhere. =)

A Farm feature from the Vancouver Daily Province, March 1926. You will most likely have to save the image to your device to read it, or use "open image in new tab" but I didn't want to lose the look of the article. It definitely has loads of little tidbits - a skunk farm at South Otter, muskrat farming and so much more. These articles are always a boon of information.
