Here are a couple of photos from AGHS member Dick Smallenberg of Aldergrove's first ice arena. It was located on the Francis farm, which covered land behind the post office, fire hall and where the second ice arena was eventually constructed in 1973-4.

The 1973 Aldergrove Secondary School Awards Programme, again from the Aldergrove Agricultural Society collection. Like the previous two programmes, this is a catalogue scan, and the programme is stuck in an evil sticky page photo album.
As we work to get documents and objects online, better and flatter scans will be made and the items will eventually be transcribed and indexed. The speed with which collections are made available is directly related to the number of volunteers doing the work.

Continuing yesterday's theme, here is the programme from the 1973 Aldergrove Secondary School Awards. Again, these are from catalogue scans, with the original stuck to an evil sticky photo page.

Here is the programme from the 1971 Aldergrove Secondary School's Awards Presentation. Please forgive the scan quality, this is from an inventory scan and the programme's back cover is stuck in one of those evil sticky photo albums, so we can't remove it without possibly damaging it.

Bertrand Creek has been a topic of conversation over the past few days, especially in regards to water quality. Today we are recognizing the work that was undertaken by the Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society - BCES in the 1990s to clean and improve the creek's path through the downtown core, including through Aldergrove Kinsmen Heritage Park, where your #communitymuseum is located.
The landscape certainly looked much different 30 years ago. The photos on the second page were taken in 1994 and show the partnership between the Aldergrove Kinsmen, Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society and Alder Grove Heritage Society in cleaning and landscaping along the creek as well as building Aldergrove Kinsmen Heritage Park. You can see in the inset photo from Google Street how much ground has been lost since the museum's official opening.

As local nurseries are gearing up for the spring planting season, we're looking back 30 years ago to the Aldergrove Community Secondary School Horticultural Programme in 1995, which was supported by the Rotary Club of Aldergrove. Rotary Park was officially opened one year earlier, in May 1994. Partnerships like these are what helps to 'grow' strong communities like Aldergrove.

This article from the Aldergrove News offers not only a look at Patricia Women's Institute, it also contains important 'where did they go' information for those tracing family lines.

Remember when the Aldergrove Festival Days Business Dress-up Contest was one of the hottest competitions in town? Everyone waited and waited for the theme to be announced and then it was off to the races to find or build props, make costumes and get their hands on the coveted first place trophy.

Today's post is to do with a tradition that doesn't seem to have made it out of the 20th century. Ladies, how many of you had a "Hope Chest" - formerly called Dower Chests or Trousseau Chests. My maternal grandmother had one, as did my Mom, and even I have one. I don't recall how old I was when it was given to me, I've just "always had it".

Today we remember George McAdam, who passed away on this day in 2011 at the age of 88. As you've seen in earlier stories, George was all about community, and he left some mighty big shoes to fill. Not to mention a very fashionable but seasonal red suit.

Mr. & Mrs. Angus McCuaig celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1959. The family moved to the Otter community from Alberta in 1944, and while I have seen the McCuaig name often in reading through the newspapers, there is not a lot to be found about them in our archives. No one seems to have researched or submitted a story about the family for The Place Between Volume 2, but they've now been added to our ever growing index of families who lived in our community.
