Did you know that we have a fair number of wedding and anniversary photos and clippings, and we're slowly matching them up with the news articles, like the one in today's post. One Star photos folder has about 50 photos from the late 1960s - early 1970s, mostly unidentified. The clippings folders have many, many engagement, wedding, anniversary and even divorce announcements. We also have obituaries. The clippings folders include clippings from other newspapers as well, not just the Aldergrove Star.

Here are a few bits of local news, including a report about the wedding of Nan Gillett, who ran a confectionary store and was Aldergrove's first telephone operator/service agent. We knew when she got married, and to whom - we've actually found some of her descendants who provided us with photos seen in other posts on this page - but it's nice to have a bit of commentary about the event. There's also a local man mentioned who volunteered for WW1, we're still trying to learn more about him in our ongoing veterans research project.

So much of this CBC News article applies to our own Community Museum & Archives, and if you watch the video (link below and in the image), some of the points raised by Sharon Gould also apply - out of town research requests regarding family history information and everything that happens in the community becomes a part of its story. Every time we go through a file folder, a box or a drawer we are finding pieces of Aldergrove's history and connecting dots that add to the narrative.
It is our hope that if you support and enjoy the results of the process, you will support the society by becoming a member and a volunteer. We are at an important cusp in our development as a volunteer society and our little band of 7 could really use the help. There are decisions to be made, projects to implement (or not …
Calling on the History Hive - over the next few days we'll be posting some unidentified photos from the Aldergrove Star collection, and we know that you'll have the names and maybe an approximate date that will help us find the news stories to go with the photos. First up, an Aldergrove Elks soccer team. =)

Post WW2, 53 BC farmers experienced the luck of the draw when their names were chosen to receive an army surplus truck to use in their farming operations. Note - the trucks were not free, the farmers had to send $330.00 in with their entry - 600 entries were received. The other catch was that they were right-hand drive. Some of the winners were from Fort Langley, Langley Prairie, Milner, Aldergrove, Mount Lehman and Abbotsford, with a "spare" winner from Coghlan. The farmers whose names were not chosen got their deposit money returned.

Today's post is a "memories" style of article by long-time resident Greta Vesterback Nelson. Her family once owned the property & had a house on the land where our museum now stands. Her husband's family owned the property where Freshco is now located. Stories about their families have been previously posted on this page.
Part of the article that was of particular interest to me was the mention of Barnsley's coffee shop. Upon doing a bit of research (a.k.a. rabbit hole), I learned that Walter & Elizabeth Barnsley bought the business from Mrs. J. Watson in the summer of 1932.
I found a fair bit of information about the Barnsley family in old issues of the Langley Advance. Mr. Barnsley was a barber by trade, so he also ran a barbershop in conjunction with what was listed as a confectionary. That said, prior to moving to Aldergrove, Mr. Barnsley ran …
Horse 4-H kids 49 years ago, and many are still friends to this day. If I remember correctly, the Abbotsford 4-H barns were possibly down on Riverside between King and Vye Roads, maybe south of Vye. It's been awhile, lol.
