I came across two interesting articles about the Aldergrove Hotel this morning, and for those who have debated as to when the name was changed to the Alder Inn, one of these articles has the answer. Whatever your feelings about the bar side of the hotel, you could almost always get a decent meal in the hotel's cafe/restaurant for a decent price. It's also nice that the 1967 article gives some background about the Frank family.

How many of you have old instruction and recipe booklets that came with long-gone appliances in your collections? We're no different, for which we're thankful because these old booklets offer a glance into our social history, specifically entertaining trends, popular foods and which recipes got used the most?

We can tell by looking closely at the pages of this booklet which recipes got used more than once - food residue, sticky pages, they are clues. Putting all of the clues together from the information presented in this booklet and comparing it to other known sources about Hamilton Beach, we can safely put a date range of 1953-1955 on this item.

An important discovery pertinent to Aldergrove's history was made at the now Township-owned former Aldergrove Hotel site during the week of January 19th 2026. We are so grateful to Randy, a neighbour of the property, for reaching out to us about the find, which will be included in a soft launch today at the museum, along with other food-related vignettes in keeping with BC Heritage Week's theme of "Stir It Up".

The Aldergrove Star article states that we've cleaned some of the bottles, which isn't quite accurate. Jesse may have cleaned some of them up a bit, but any remaining dirt and debris that was on them when they came to us is still present, serving as a reminder that these bottles remained hidden deep underground for at least 100 years.

Two new Aldergrove businesses opened in March 1970, so if you were curious as to which came first, Brian Findlay's car wash or his sports shop, the answer is the car wash. See tomorrow's story for the opening of the Aldergrove Sports Centre. More importantly, the photo of the car wash shows the little house that stood just to the west of the Rose Garden Motel. The Aldergrove Paint Supplies store sat on Fraser Highway on the lot to the east of the Stoelting's building, where the online auction place is now (formerly the site of Steve's Lighting).

Did you know that we have a fair number of wedding and anniversary photos and clippings, and we're slowly matching them up with the news articles, like the one in today's post. One Star photos folder has about 50 photos from the late 1960s - early 1970s, mostly unidentified. The clippings folders have many, many engagement, wedding, anniversary and even divorce announcements. We also have obituaries. The clippings folders include clippings from other newspapers as well, not just the Aldergrove Star.
