Who was Walter Levy & why is the annual residential Christmas Light-up Contest named for him?

Walter was bigger than life. He was present in his community & a stalwart mentor when it came to giving back to community. I looked up to him & will always be grateful for the lessons he taught & the time he gave so freely. If something needed doing & Walter could help, he did.

Walter emigrated to Canada from Germany in 1951, working in Edmonton & then Clearwater. He came to Vancouver in 1953 & worked as a bricklayer. Walter met Afke Groenhof at the Alpen Hall in Vancouver & they married in December 1954, having 5 children: Henry, Bob, Walter Jr, Anny & Betty.

In 1961 they moved to a small chicken farm at Otter. Walter continued bricklaying & in 1966 they moved to acreage on 264th south of 24th.

169 Columbia - Royal Canadian Sea Cadets training at CFS Aldergrove in 1995 was a community affair, with benefits for both cadets and firefighters. The 15th Field Regiment Vancouver Artillery Association also made use of the training grounds that year.

An interesting story from CBC Calgary about a thrift store find that the Calgary Genealogical Society is trying to trace back to a family member. We haven't heard of any such finds in our local thrift stores, but we hope that if a box of memorabilia such as this one is found among their donations that they contact us so that the materials can either be preserved or returned to a family member.

Last week we learned that in 1964 the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #265, Aldergrove used building bonds to raise money for its new home. In 1975 the Legion expanded, adding more indoor space as well as outdoor community space.
