The ecological systems of north Aldergrove 1992 still need protection from "progress" in 2025. Can you spot the fourth deer (no prize like what was offered by the Star).

Welcome back to school - it's the Betty Gilbert Class of 2003-4 Talent Show. The video was only 30 minutes in length and seems to jump a bit, so we're pretty sure it's not the entire show but we hope you enjoy it anyway. =)

Another weekend with so many events going on starting this afternoon with Shortreed Community Elementary School's Family Fun Fair. Some of the upcoming events listed do require registration and/or tickets, so be sure to get more information about them if you want to attend. We encourage you to get out there and #bepresent in #ourcommunity by supporting local schools and community groups.

We've talked about the old County Line Store before, but had not posted this story from the Langley Advance. While it wasn't on Grosvenor-Laing property, the empty store was one more building in the area that went up in flames.
Our second story today, which we missed in our 1962 Grosvenor-Laing recap, is somewhat more tragic as it resulted in the loss of 14 dogs. The house, which was a Grosvenor-Laing rental, was home to the Anson family. Except for the dogs, no humans were home when the fire started. Mr. Anson was the Editor and Advertising Manager for the Aldergrove News for a number of years.

There's no council meeting to keep many of us occupied today, so let's look back at 1963 to see what the region's planners and politicians were cooking up in the way of development and land use. What are your thoughts on this report vs where the Township is today?

1962 for the Grosvenor-Laing project in north Aldergrove started with another fire and a flooding issue, followed by a bumper berry crop, followed by more fires. By the end of the year, some were pondering the proliferation of fires - even though the January fire did appear to be an accident.

Industrial development in the Langley district wasn't quite as front and centre in the press in 1961. Probably because Grosvenor-Laing had its fingers in many pies, including Guildford, Dell and a Victoria shopping mall as well as industrial parks along the Fraser River.

A heartfelt thank you to the British Columbia Historical Federation for awarding our society with a $1200.00 grant from the Centennial Legacy Fund for the purchase of an overhead scanner that will greatly assist in the digitization of documents, books, photos and maps in our collection that cannot be placed on a flatbed scanner due to their size and/or fragility.

Happy Victoria Day weekend! There are SO many events this weekend and coming up in the next week, there's no excuse for not finding something to do. Please note that some events require tickets or pre-registration, and the August butterfly release is open for pre-orders. Have a happy and safe weekend, everyone.

Due to the proximity of Aldergrove's naval base to Chilliwack's army base, locals grew accustomed to military training exercises being conducted in the area. Sometimes soldiers were dropped off with minimal supplies and told to make it back to base while eluding capture (with Abby PD and the RCMP trying to make that aspect as difficult as possible), sometimes the bases were put under "attack" and sometimes they had to deal with mock civil unrest.

From our archives: an aerial photo of Abbotsford International Airport. The most likely date is the early 1960s, as this photo may have been taken during the same flight as many of the Aldergrove aerial photos found in our archives.

Today we recognize the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a look back at the Victory Bond adverts from the 10 May 1945 edition of the Langley Advance, which reminded those at home that while Germany had surrendered, the Pacific Theatre was still an active battle zone, and there was much work yet to be done in Europe.

In the early 1990s there was a movement afoot in regards to Aldergrove standing on its own, with the cause being put to the forefront by the 'Aldergrove Republican Army' and 'Aldergrove Without Langley (AWOL)'. Here are just a few of the news highlights from the Aldergrove Star.
