Today we hope that you will join us in remembering Jackman Manor resident George Ives, who passed away on 12 April 1993 at the age of 111. Not only was he the last surviving Boer War veteran, he was probably the oldest person to have ever lived in our community.
George lived a life of adventure and good humour, met HRH Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Diana Princess of Wales and Lady Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. George was well travelled, and we can only imagine the experiences he enjoyed through the years.
George came to Canada in 1903 (on the flip of a coin) as part of the Barr Colonists group, married Kate Nelson in Alberta in 1910, and they remained married until her passing in 1987. They had a family of 6 children, 3 of whom survived George. Their youngest son Alfred died tragically in a logging accident near Nanaimo in 1966. Eldest son Sidney passed away at Chilliwack Hospital in 1970, followed by eldest daughter Mollie at MSA General in 1986. George's father Frederick lived to 100, passing away in England in 1957.
(you may need to open the images in new tabs in order to read them all...sorry, but there were just so many stories to share)
