It's Election Day in Canada, and while the attached news article from the Langley Advance is speaking about the Township Election for 1943/4, the sentiment is the same. VOTE! It would be nice to see the 1958 record high for voter engagement shattered. It is both interesting and relatable that while voting during war years was high, the average was highest during the Cold War era.

This was a fun game to watch - the merchants put up a valiant effort in their battle against Langley RCMP but couldn't overcome that 3 goal deficit.

Building the new Trans Canada Highway - 1961. Aldergrove's residents, along with Aldergrove Chamber of Commerce and Aldergrove Volunteer Fire Department fought a long and often heated battle with Victoria to have an overpass built at 272 Street. Victoria prevailed, so now when things are all backed up at 264 and Highway 1 (which never ever happens), the closest alternatives are the circuitous routes via Otter or Bradner Roads. Provincial Highways minister Gaglardi was not a popular politician in these parts.

Aldergrove was home to pretty talented bowlers, which was why Mr. & Mrs. JE Scott undertook the building of Alder Lanes, which opened back in April 1962.

Last week we looked at the grand opening for the Cadet Training Centre. This week we're going back in time by a few decades to look at the cadets working on a building that had been donated to the corps by Grosvenor-Laing, one of the first developers who had plans for north Aldergrove.

Who remembers this event? I was coming back from Langley and witnessed the collision, but it wasn't until I got back to town that I found out what had happened. A job well done by Langley RCMP

Today we hope that you will join us in remembering Jackman Manor resident George Ives, who passed away on 12 April 1993 at the age of 111. Not only was he the last surviving Boer War veteran, he was probably the oldest person to have ever lived in our community.
George lived a life of adventure and good humour, met HRH Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Diana Princess of Wales and Lady Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. George was well travelled, and we can only imagine the experiences he enjoyed through the years.
George came to Canada in 1903 (on the flip of a coin) as part of the Barr Colonists group, married Kate Nelson in Alberta in 1910, and they remained married until her passing in 1987. They had a family of 6 children, 3 of whom survived George. Their youngest son Alfred died tragically in …

The Aldergrove community was always sad to see long time residents move away, but they were always sent off in style - even if they were only moving across the river and would be back frequently to visit family and friends.
