Aldergrove and her communities have always been ready to step up in times of need, and WW2 was no exception. The ladies formed a Red Cross unit in each district - Aldergrove, Coghlan, County Line, Otter and Patricia - and even though it was a time of rationing and belt tightening, these ladies continued to bake, sew, knit and organize fundraisers, giving freely of their time and talents. Today's post features a very small sampling of the efforts put forth by Aldergrove's ladies of the Red Cross.
The second image features the knitting pattern for Red Cross Army Socks, and we humbly ask that if there are any knitters viewing this page, if she (or he) would be willing to knit a pair of these socks for us to place in the military section of our exhibits. Credit will be noted in the display. =)

Here is our final Victory Garden column from 1944, along with a pre-election advert from 1943 that I wish I'd found before our recent provincial election. Hopefully those who didn't get out and vote in previous elections will be moved enough to cast a ballot in the next one.

November 8 is #IndigenousVeteransDay in Canada.
On National Indigenous Peoples Day in 2001, a monument to Indigenous Veterans was unveiled in Ottawa, the result of the hard work & perseverance of the National Aboriginal Veterans Association, the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples & Senator Nick Taylor.
Sculptor & painter Lloyd Pinay of Peepeekisis First Nation in Saskatchewan designed the Monument which is reflective of all Indigenous peoples in Canada: First Nations, Métis & Inuit. His dad was a WW2 Veteran & was severely wounded towards the end of the war.
The richly symbolic sculpture represents the stories of thousands of men & women who have played a decisive role in defending the freedom of our country. It symbolizes the strength of the Indigenous peoples' beliefs as drawn from the natural world around them. The artist makes frequent use of the number 4, which has spiritual importance for many Indigenous peoples. The …

Today we're looking back at the opening of Aldergrove's first Legion branch in 1966. The first Legion was at the eastern edge of town, at 27279 Fraser Highway, and it was from there that our current Royal Canadian Legion Branch #265, Aldergrove BC building was born. Many of you may not know this, but your local Legion provides financial support to many community events and groups, including this society, and for that we are very grateful.
In addition to being Day 5 of Veterans' Week, today is also World Digital Preservation Day, and it is through the assistance of the BC History Digitization Programme that we were able to digitally preserve the Aldergrove Star Oct 1957 - Dec 2000, enabling us to able to share so many stories about our community's history. Thanks are also due to Gulf & Fraser for providing the funds needed to update and equip the …

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 265 Aldergrove is part of our community's backbone. Through its various events during the year, the Aldergrove Legion continuously gives back to this community, not just on Remembrance Day, but year round. Donations to community groups, scholarships for youth, comradeship for veterans, events and activities. If you haven't done so already, please support the #LegionPoppyFund and #buyapoppytoday.

There wasn't a Victory Garden article for 2 November 1944, so instead we'll have a look at contributions to the WW1 Patriotic Fund. Note that Aldergrove Farmers' Institute outdid the Langley Farmers' Institute, while in the Womens' Institute section, you won't see any of Aldergrove's WI groups listed. This is because none of them were formed until the 1920s.
The National Service Board of Canada also carried some subtle and not so subtle messaging in its War Bonds/War Effort advertising in 1917.

This letter home from an RCN sailor named John was brought into our museum in August by a couple who had moved here from Alberta. The letter was found in the glove box of a truck that had been purchased at auction and then traded to the couple in exchange for farm work. Thus far we haven't identified "John", but we're still trying.
