Did you know that there was an Aldergrove connection to the endless searching for the Lost Creek Mine (Slumach's Gold)? In 1959 three hopeful prospecting farmers set off to try their luck in locating the treasure.
Of the three prospectors, Alf Newman was the easiest to trace as his sister Bessie married Richard Catto, son of early settler Joseph Catto and his other sister Elsie married Trevor Beggs. Alf passed away in 1981, age 66. At the time of his death he lived at the Alderhaven apartments, 27264 30 Avenue.
One of the articles states that Robert Blakey lived on Kendall Road (62 Avenue). According to the 1958 phone book, this also is where his mother lived. Their address was 26191 62 Avenue. Sadly, Robert died when he fell into the Fraser River in October 1975. His body was found near Bowman's Mill, which was located in Chilliwack. On his death registration his occupation was listed as prospector. He was 59 years old.
I have not been able thus far to trace Don Gray in the time I've had available to research his story.
