Although the Right To Vote for BC women was still 32 years off, there was a petition presented to the BC Legislature in 1885 requesting that the provincial government grant the franchise to its women residents. This petition, which was submitted to Victoria and is available through the BC Sessional Papers, is important to family historians who may have had an ancestor in the province at that time, particularly if that person was active in local politics and it's even better if they had an uncommon name. For reference, a timeline of voting rights for all women has been included with this post.

Picture Day At Aldergrove School 1916.
Unfortunately, at this time we don't have a class list identifying the students. In the future we may be able to garner some names by comparing these photos with the many family photos in our archives.

How is your garden coming along? Here is this week's 1944 Victory Garden post, along with some Glen Valley School students minding their garden plots. There are some great events happening around town this weekend, let's hope the weather remembers that it's going to be a summer weekend.
*Special Note* - if you're driving to Philip Jackman Park for Nate's Memorial Ball Tournament, may we ask that you please don't park in front of the museum on Sunday? Our volunteers need somewhere to park, too. Thank you =)

We are gathering names for these school photos. Some are complete but you are welcome to add names (and position in photo) and school memories in the comments. Your assistance is appreciated. =)

Land transactions always help put together the record of a community's history, and in the Hart story, we have a number of clues to help put that story together. We have copies of the Land Pre-emptions made by men such as Lawrence Gilbert (who married Emily Jackman, daughter of Philip Jackman Sr) and John Walter Berry, but it's the later land sales and purchases that add substance to those stories by adding names, dates and places. We have a growing database of those names, dates and places which one day in the not too distant future (depends on volunteer availability to find, sort and enter the data) will be fully searchable and available for all to use.

Another County Line School photo has been found lurking in the files, this one from 1948. Names and spellings were provided by Norm Flowerdew at time of donation. Except for her attire, teacher Miss Eddy looks more like one of the students than she does a teacher.

Why is it important to #tellyourstory? Why is it important to ask questions of your elders, to learn their story?
This 1992 death registration for Anna Caroline Stockton (nee Broe) is a shining example of why. Anna and her husband Ronald didn't have any children, so the information for this document was provided by her nephew Jack Cantelon, the son of Anna's sister Edna (1890-1986).
Anna's nephew should have at least known his maternal Grandmother's name was Serena Satre (she went by Serena but it was formally Sörine). She wasn't born in Fargo, ND. She was born in Ossian, Iowa in 1864 and died in Vancouver in 1960. I know from newspaper articles that Jack spent a lot of time in the company of his Grandmother.
Jack should have also known that his aunt was not born in Ontario. As stated on her 1900 birth registration, she was born at …

Here is a tourist brochure that was issued by the BC Electric Railway company in 1913. We have posted the bird's eye view map before, but weren't aware that it had come from this publication, which offers some very interesting information and photos about the Fraser Valley when there was a passenger train service between Vancouver and Chilliwack. Tomorrow we'll have a look at the BCER tourist brochure for the Vancouver city lines.

I stumbled across an interesting bio piece on Frederick J Hart, and while we already know a fair bit about him as he was the original owner of the building that now houses our community's museum and archives. A new bit of information is his involvement in the Westminster Masonic Temple Company Ltd and the Western Steamboat Company Ltd. We also found in another article not shown here that Mr. Hart was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, at one time serving as the Grand Noble of Lodge 19, Mt. Pleasant. He was also responsible for the subdividing of Aldergrove's downtown core into business and residential lots in the 1910s.

Ahhhh the old "Society Pages" - the place where parents wanted to see the names and photos of their children - especially their daughters - because it was where one would hope to 'advertise' the eligibility and virtues of these young ladies, sometimes in hopes of finding a suitable husband.
So you might be asking why is a Society page from 1931 important to Aldergrove's history. Easy answer - Anna Broe. The Broe family at one time lived in the Patricia district of Aldergrove, and while we knew about the Broe family from what was published in The Place Between Volume 1, we wanted to add more to the story, and there was definitely more. So much more. (Search the page for Broe for the Volume 1 story and a photo of the Broe's hop kiln.)
We've now amassed well over 100 news articles and other biographical material on the …
