Aldergrove Centre Mall c.1979 - Stedman's opened in September 1978, when the pharmacy was still United Pharmacy, but by May 1979 it was a Payless Drugs store.

HMCS Aldergrove expanded its land holdings in 1965, later putting the buildings on the expropriated land up for sale. There were a number of sales, only one advert is shown here, but there was another tender ad with a later deadline of June, and another ad one year later in 1967. It would be interesting to see the sales results and fate of the buildings that were sold. I imagine that those which didn't sell were demolished.

Today is the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Coghlan Women's Institute. Did you know that we have several boxes of Coghlan WI items in our archives? Women's Institutes were an integral part of the majority of Canadian communities, it's a shame that so many have ceased to exist.

Today's post looks at a small sample of 1950s Civil Defence news items and procedures as well as an evacuation map for the Greater Vancouver area, in which the Township wasn't yet included. Aldergrove and her communities have always been ready to step up in times of need, and WW2 was no exception. The ladies formed a Red Cross unit in each district - Aldergrove, Coghlan, County Line, Otter and Patricia - and even though it was a time of rationing and belt tightening, these ladies continued to bake, sew, knit and organize fundraisers, giving freely of their time and talents. Today's post features a very small sampling of the efforts put forth by Aldergrove's ladies of the Red Cross.

The second image features the knitting pattern for Red Cross Army Socks, and we humbly ask that if there are any knitters viewing this page, if she (or he) would be willing to knit a pair of these socks for us to place in the military section of our exhibits. Credit will be noted in the display. =)
