#CommunityEvents for this Thanksgiving long weekend.

Note that Saturday is the final day of the season for our friends over at the Fort Langley CN Historic Station, so be sure to stop by and see all of the wonderful things that the @Langley Heritage Society has developed this year.

This photo was found in one of the hundreds of digital file folders on one of the museum's old computers. Sadly, there is nothing to identify the school, the people or who may have donated it to the archives. Maybe we will get lucky and find more information in one of the 'donations' files, as it doesn't appear to have been used in either of our books. We did, however, notice all of the bare feet and that two of the girls in the front row appear to be sisters, maybe even twins.

Another digital file found on one of the old computers in the museum is this detailed map of Fort Langley. While we don't know how this copy was acquired, the map is very useful to our researchers because a lot of the time we'll have a name but no location, and this map lets us see if the person perhaps lived in Fort Langley, not Aldergrove. We often reference area maps looking for information on people and places.

Maps such as this are also useful in showing where the businesses were located, because for many years, Aldergrove residents would trek to Fort Langley to get supplies and merchandise.

We've been scanning our way through the files, with Teresa and Sarah working on the hundreds of family history files that were gathered for our two Aldergrove & Communities history books, The Place Between volumes 1 and 2, while I've been scanning the many binders and "outlying" file folders. Scott's been working on a searchable cemetery burials database and Andrew's been working on researching and documenting our community's veterans. All will eventually culminate in searchable digital files that will be available to researchers and those interested in #localhistory.

Many of the pages that we come across have a photo negative attached. Many are of photos that are available in the two books, but there are also many that were not included in the books. This is one such photo, but the documentation included adds more information to the overall story of our community and also points to other stories that …

Today we're taking a look at the HMCS Aldergrove swimming pool and its addition to the Base's amenities - and traditions, which involved the CO going for a dip.

The lower right photo is from 1984, featuring outgoing LCDR Poole and incoming LCDR Stanley.

Carrying on from yesterday's post, here's two more pages from the Coghlan Booklet put together by the late Mary Twemlow.

Haying season was always a busy time with incredible lunch spreads as haying crews moved from farm to farm bringing in the hay crops. It was also a time of sore backs, aching arms, sunburns, persistent sneezing and itchy skin, but it was an experience that highlighted the importance of community and co-operation in those of us who grew up on many of Aldergrove's working farms.

Welcome to the weekend, here is this week's 1944 Victory Garden article that looks at the value of home gardens, along with another page from the Coghlan Booklet. Tomorrow we'll have a look at some older haying practices, and those of us who grew up on working farms will definitely be able to relate. =)

We've had a few requests for the names of the bands that played at the 1969 Aldergrove Beach Rock Festival. Here are a few articles and reviews that name a good many of the musical acts.

There was a programme produced for the festival (included with the price of admission) and if anyone out there still has one, we would love to be able to scan and return it to you (unless you want to donate it to our archives). =)

Facebook imageFacebook

Another Aldergrove history nugget - this postcard was sent from Aunt Carrie (Anna Caroline Jackman nee Wadel), who was the wife of Philip Jackman Jr, to one of her nieces, Emilia Lehmann. While we haven't yet placed Emilia in the Settler Family Tree yet, we have some great clues as to which branch she belongs.

The note in blue ink was added at some later date, we don't know when or by whom. We also now know who took the photo of Philip Jackman Sr's first house in Aldergrove. For years we thought it was FJ Hart when in fact it was well-known photographer W T Cooksley.

Aldergrove's RCSCC Columbia was keeping busy during the summer of 1963, let's have a look at what they were accomplishing in this week's Aldergrove News columns.

This week's featured photos are large logs used for very tall radio reception masts.
